"She who walked through flames to reach the lotus throne — a demon, a saint, a vision of damnation and salvation."
Legend speaks of a peerless oiran of the floating world, famed for her beauty and her defiance of death. When she fell mortally ill, Jigoku Tayu summoned the very flames of Jigoku (hell) within her heart. As she lay dying, she prayed to Fudō Myō-ō, the immovable wisdom king, and upon her death she transformed — neither oni nor bodhisattva, but a tormented yet transcendent spirit of the borderlands.
She appears clad in robes of burning crimson, her obi painted with scenes of the Eight Great Hells. Her visage is both terrifying and sublime: a warning, an icon of fierce compassion for those trapped in karmic cycles. Pilgrims visit her shrine to ask for guidance through personal hells — addiction, grief, obsession — and to witness the beauty born from suffering.

Classical ukiyo-e prints depict Jigoku Tayu with wild hair flowing like inferno, kimono emblazoned with skeletons and flames. In the 18th century, a Nirvana painting (涅槃図) shows her receiving a sacred scroll from the King of Hell — granting her the right to save lost souls. Woodblock collections honour her as one of the great "Floating World Wanderers".
